Xtreme Performance XTP®

High toughness, high fatigue strength and excellent formability – steel often has to exhibit a range of physical and mechanical properties, some of which run counter to each other. Our Xtreme Performance (XTP®) Technology produces ultrafine-grained steels that can meet all these demands.

A new dimension of inner strength

According to conventional wisdom, if you want to impart special properties to a standard steel, you have to add expensive alloying elements or subject the steel to complex additional treatment stages. Thanks to Steeltec’s XTP® Technology that is no longer the case! XTP® Technology is a unique approach that involves subjecting steel to controlled thermomechanical treatment. By carefully controlling the temperature profiles and the bulk forming forces to which the steel is exposed, we can produce an extremely homogeneous, fine-grained steel microstructure with a grain size of less than 5 µm. The result is a steel with improved properties and enhanced dynamic and mechanical performance:

  • Improved low-temperature toughness down to -101 °C for greater reliability in low-temperature applications
  • Increased tensile strength of up to 2050 MPa
  • Dynamic strength increased by at least ten percent, leading to extended tool lives and improved operational safety
  • Higher resistance to crack propagation
  • Significantly improved isotropic properties
  • Ductility and machinability remain unchanged
  • Components can be redimensioned without loss of physical and mechanical properties – making component design more flexible
  • Bar stock exhibits a very high degree of straightness. Bar lengths of up to 8000 (-0/+200) mm can be supplied with tolerances that conform to ISO tolerance class h11 (see DIN EN ISO 286-2).
  • No thermal distortion and no need for additional heat treatment.

Ultrafine-grained steell: high strength and excellent toughness thanks to Xtreme Performance XTP®

While XTP®-treated steel looks just like conventional steel from the outside, its true quality lies hidden inside. The ultra-fine-grained micro-structure of the steel offers previously unattained levels of material resistance and strength. XTP® Technology: Opening up a whole new world of possibilities for the design and engineering of steel components.

How we make high-performance steels for applications with high levels of dynamic loading

In collaboration with its partners, Steeltec developed its innovative XTP® Technology in 2016. Careful inductive heating of the steel up to its austenitization temperature allows us to control the properties of the steel and its grain size. The steel bar is then immediately cooled down to the rolling temperature and then fed into the high-reduction roller unit.

In short: heat + force = ultrafine-grained steel

Steeltec – Making and supplying steels for the future

Our XTP® Technology allows manufacturers to continue to use their preferred steels. The properties of XTP®-treated steels are optimized so that customers no longer need costly additional heat treatment stages.

Steels that are suitable for XTP® treatment are:

  • Unalloyed steels
  • Precipitation-hardened ferrite-pearlite steels / PHFP steels
  • Bainitic steels
  • Quenched and tempered steels
  • Tool steels
  • Austenitic stainless steels
  • Ferritic stainless steels
  • High-speed steels
