Quenched and tempered steels for when strength is paramount

Quenched and tempered (QT) steel is used primarily for parts that are subjected to large dynamic loads, such as those found in the mechanical engineering applications and in the toolmaking sector. QT steel is characterized by high strength, good resistance to wear and toughness. At Steeltec, the heat treatment process is performed on our XTP® line, which is fully compliant with the requirements of the AIAG CQI-9 standard.

Quenched and tempered steels

Quenched and tempered steels obtain their properties for use by austenitizing, quenching and tempering. In the quenched and tempered condition, they cover a minimum tensile strength range of around 470 to 1250 N/mm². In addition to good tensile strength, they are also characterized by high yield strength and ductility. The properties in the final state should be as homogeneous as possible across the cross-section. Compared with the quality steels, the stainless steels not only have lower phosphorus and sulfur contents but also more uniform properties, for example after heat treatment.

Single-bar heat treatment

By subjecting single steel bars to controlled induction hardening, quenching and tempering, the microstructure and material properties of each individual bar can be carefully adjusted, thus exploiting the full potential of the material. The continuous rotating feed mechanism ensures that each bar is heated evenly, gradually improving the mechanical properties of the steel until the required quality level has been achieved. This also helps to improve bar straightness. The result is an extremely strong, high-performance QT steel from Steeltec, with each bar and each production batch exhibiting uniform mechanical properties.

In addition, a carefully controlled quench-and-temper cycle on individual bars yields a product that meets the stringent demands of the automotive industry – demands that are set to become even stricter as a result of tighter DIN tolerances and standards. Steel bars that are treated on our XTP® line are CQI-9 compliant.

Would you prefer a steel with strength values in a certain range or would you like the steel’s toughness or ductility to be adjusted to a certain value? With Steeltec’s single-bar heat treatment line, customer preferences can be made reality. Talk to us to learn more.
