Cold-heading steels – low flow stress, high ductility

Steel that is to be formed into screws, bolts or hollow parts by an upsetting or heading operation needs to show good cold workability.

Despite their high strength, our cold-heading steels do just that. In addition to their good ductility, these steels also exhibit low flow stress and a low propensity to work hardening.

Low flow stress, high formability: our cold heading steels

In the rolled steel sector, we offer steels with improved cold workability for upsetting and heading operations. These materials are characterized by low flow stress, by a low propensity to work hardening during the forming process and by high ductility. To ensure the best quality cold-headed products, these steels are as free as possible from internal and external defects. Depending on the type of steel used in the cold-forming process, the material can be subjected to a controlled annealing process to achieve a lower initial strength.

Swissbain-7MnB8: A combination of wire rod strength and strain hardening

Swissbain-7MnB8 is a special microalloyed bainitic steel that is suitable for cold-heading operations without heat treatment. We can adjust the strength of the component through a combination of the initial strength of the wire rod and the strain hardening that occurs during the drawing and cold-heading processes.

The technical properties of Swissbain-7MnB8 allow, among others, the following economic benefits:

  • Savings in the cost of heat treatment prior to cold forming
  • Savings in the cost of quenching and tempering
  • Savings in the undesirable follow-up costs of quenching and tempering, e.g. machining costs or costs for straightening
  • Savings in machining, due to comparatively good machinability
  • Savings in further processing due to good weldability

Our high-strength cold-heading steel ETG® 25 is the ideal material for cold-forming processes

ETG® 25 is a bright steel that is ready for immediate use. With no need for complex heat treatment operations or other downstream procedures such as straightening, cleaning or rejection of out-of-spec products, we can help users achieve a significant reduction in their manufacturing costs.

Our special production process imparts exceptional flow characteristics to ETG® 25. While substantial forming forces are required right from the start in order to overcome the material’s high yield point, the resistance to flow remains remarkably constant even at very high degrees of deformation.

Product range

ETG® 25 is available in the following types and dimensions
