Steels with outstanding cold-working properties

Steeltec has three products in its portfolio that are ideally suited for cold-forming operations: Swissbain-7MnB8, ETG® 25 and HSX® 90. All three have one common characteristic: an optimal combination of high initial strength and good formability.

The mechanical properties that a steel needs to have will depend entirely on the details of how it will be used in a specific application. That’s why at Steeltec our bar drawing process is carefully controlled to produce the ideal, application-specific combination of material strength and toughness. We also offer a wide range of material sizes and carefully adjusted alloy compositions. This allows to maintain tight tolerances and our in-line surface quality testing ensure the best possible surface finish. The potential risks associated with low-purity materials are identified very early in the production process, which allows us to react in a timely manner. As a result, we are able to offer customized steel solutions with particularly impressive levels of purity.

High standards also apply to contract finishing work

Our high quality standards also apply whenever external contractors carry out final finishing operations on our steel products, such as annealing, coating or special heat treatment operations. We also maintain a high level of flexibility with respect to coil heights and weights. For cold-heading operations, a variety of ovens can be used for downstream heat treatment. IATF 16949 certification means that numerous OEMs in the automotive industry can rely with confidence on our processes – right through to the final product.

Shorter production times with Swissbain-7MnB8

Customers who work with Swissbain-7MnB8 can fabricate components efficiently and in a resource-friendly manner while ensuring that their components have consistently uniform properties. Thanks to its special microstructure and its outstanding mechanical properties, Swissbain-7MnB8 is ideally suited for cold forming operations. Compared with commonly used QT steels, Swissbain-7MnB8 is significantly more efficient, due in part to shorter fabrication times, e.g. in the manufacture of high-strength components for the automotive and construction industries. And by choosing Swissbain-7MnB8, there is no longer a need for costly additional processing steps. It is also easy to weld, easy to machine and produces parts with an outstanding surface quality.

Boosting competitiveness with ETG® 25 and HSX® 90

Steeltec’s ETG® 25 and HSX® 90 steels are also ideal materials for manufacturing cold-formed parts. ETG® 25 is the high-strength special steel solution for all applications that demand steel stock with excellent cold working, bending and welding properties. Our HSX® 90 steel offers high strength even its as-delivered state and is well-suited for cold-forming operations, such as the production of threaded parts. The properties that a customer requires with respect to the steel’s machinability, cold-workability or weldability can be precisely adjusted during the production process. High-strength special steels from Steeltec enable customers to reduce costs and boost market competitiveness.

Will the part or component be machined?

Around 85% of the costs in parts manufacturing are attributable to process costs. It is therefore worthwhile to optimize these costs with the targeted use of materials. Steeltec free-cutting steels are optimized for machining. Steeltec has also developed high-strength special products with outstanding machining properties. Short chip breaking, longer tool life and high uniformity across batches open up new possibilities in the design of manufacturing processes.

More about machining

Will the part or component be subjected to particular large stresses?

Materials for highly stressed parts must not only be outstandingly machinable, but also withstand high loads. A typical load - for hydraulic components, for example - is dynamic stress. To withstand it, users need a steel with a good ratio of strength and toughness.

More about static and dynamic loading

Will the part or component be processed asymmetrically?

High dimensional stability and uniform machining behavior are decisive for an economical and plannable manufacturing process. The manufacturing costs per part are decisive, especially in high-volume production. Our low-distortion steels are designed to meet specified geometries and tolerances and minimize financial risk.

Will an additional heat-treatment stage be carried out?

Thanks to in-depth chemical analysis, Steeltec is able to design materials in such a way that desired mechanical-technological component properties are achieved after heat treatment. This results in a wide range of high-quality steel designed to meet individual customer requirements. In the bright steel sector, we will be pleased to advise you on what needs to be taken into account in the case of additional hardening.

More about heat treatment

Will the part or component be welded?

Welding is particularly important for chains and structural grades, but also for applications such as the manufacture of wire baskets. Steeltec's rolled steels can be welded using various techniques. Welding requires materials that are alloyed. In addition, just as in bending, the steel needs a certain hardness, but it must be possible to machine it. And it must be possible to heat it without creating too much stress.
