High-strength steels for enhanced performance

Manufacturing components that are lighter and more compact or manufacturing components that offer improved performance without the need for upsizing – these are some of the increasingly challenging demands that are being placed on today’s steel materials.

Steels that can meet these requirements need to have both high strength and a high yield point. Steeltec’s high-strength and higher-strength steels are therefore ideal materials. At Steeltec we have the ability to carefully control the composition and properties of our steels – from the melt right through to the final product.

Anyone who has experienced being pushed back into the seat of their car when accelerating on the freeway, has got some idea of the forces acting on the vehicle’s drive train. The material from which the drive chain components are made has to be able to withstand these forces. But it can only do that within limits. Once its yield point has been reached, the material will start to deform. And if the applied stress is greater then the strength of the material, the steel will fracture. At Steeltec, we are able to extend these crucial limits in the steels that we produce.

Conventionally, the strength of a material can be increased by additional processing operations, such as hardening and annealing. With higher strength steels from Steeltec, there is no need for such additional processing stages as our steels already exhibit high strength in their as-delivered state. We can supply:

Significantly enhanced performance without needing to resize your components

With increasing engine power, the drive shaft of a vehicle has to be able to transfer greater torque and to withstand higher alternating loads. Our higher strength special steels perform significantly better than conventional quenched and tempered steels – without needing to increase the dimensions of the shaft.

Significant material savings without any loss in performance

Higher strength steels play a key role when seeking to manufacture compacter components of lower mass. These steels enable the component dimensions – and thus the amount of material required – to be reduced substantially without suffering any decrease in component performance.

Strong and tough thanks to Steeltec’s advanced steel treatment technologies

We can impart a very uniform microstructure to our steels during the rolling stage. By combining careful control of melt composition, sophisticated chemical analysis and advanced thermomechanical treatment, we are able to adjust the the microstructure of our steel products very precisely. Carefully controlled cooling gradients allow us to adjust the grain size and thus optimize the complex relationship between material strength and material toughness. The result is a high-strength steel that retains good formability and has physical and mechanical properties that meet the customer’s specific application requirements.

Will the part or component be machined?

Around 85% of the costs in parts manufacturing are attributable to process costs. It is therefore worthwhile to optimize these costs with the targeted use of materials. Steeltec free-cutting steels are optimized for machining. Steeltec has also developed high-strength special products with outstanding machining properties. Short chip breaking, longer tool life and high uniformity across batches open up new possibilities in the design of manufacturing processes.

Will the part or component be processed asymmetrically?

High dimensional stability and uniform machining behavior are decisive for an economical and plannable manufacturing process. The manufacturing costs per part are decisive, especially in high-volume production. Our low-distortion steels are designed to meet specified geometries and tolerances and minimize financial risk.

Will the part or component be subject to a cold-forming process?

The required properties - for example in terms of machinability, cold formability or weldability - can be precisely adjusted to customer specifications during the process. Thanks to very good cold forming properties, steels are formed into components, e.g. fasteners, by cold forming. Depending on the application requirements, they exhibit high strength and high durability. To achieve this, the materials must combine high initial strength with good formability. Special steels from Steeltec enable efficient and resource-saving production.

Will an additional heat-treatment stage be carried out?

Thanks to in-depth chemical analysis, Steeltec is able to design materials in such a way that desired mechanical-technological component properties are achieved after heat treatment. This results in a wide range of high-quality steel designed to meet individual customer requirements. In the bright steel sector, we will be pleased to advise you on what needs to be taken into account in the case of additional hardening.

Will the part or component be welded?

Welding is particularly important for chains and structural grades, but also for applications such as the manufacture of wire baskets. Steeltec's rolled steels can be welded using various techniques. Welding requires materials that are alloyed. In addition, just as in bending, the steel needs a certain hardness, but it must be possible to machine it. And it must be possible to heat it without creating too much stress.
